Bel Canto Studies for Trumpet,
edited by John Korak. Seventy-seven studies written by
19th Century vocal teachers (Abt, Marchesi, Nava, Tosti, Vacci,
etc).
Like the popular Complete Solfeggi
of Concone (BQ-51), this volume is full of music that is enjoyable
to play and good for the trumpeter’s physical and musical
well-being.
But that's just where the project begins. At the end of each study,
John lists a group of keys to which he suggests the player transpose
the piece. So it serves as a challenging door to the necessary art
of transposition.
An accompanying CD-ROM
includes four more versions of the book. These include all of the
piano accompaniments
for use with the Bb trumpet and C trumpet in printable PDF files.
Another printable, PDF file contains all of the studies in the book
written with Moving Transpositions
for the trumpet. This means that one phrase may be for "Trumpet
in Bb" and the next may be "Trumpet in F" etc.
The final and perhaps most unique feature included on the CD is
all the accompaniments in SmartMusic
files. This will allow you to play the studies with the computer
playing the accompaniments. (You do need SmartMusic
software, bundled with Finale or obtained through MakeMusic.com).
This feature is really enjoyable and you end up playing a lot more
because it pulls you through the music.
Added in November 2010, upgraded SmartMusic
files will be loaded onto this web page for downloading
(no extra charge). These new SmartMusic files address some shortcomings
with the files found on the CD. A PDF
file explaining this improvement and showing how to upgrade
the printed book is also presented here for you to download.
