Renaissance Trios
for three trumpets

As with Renaissance Duets for Two Trumpets (BQ-116), the clear voicing and counterpoint and the resulting economical harmonies provide opportunities to increase awareness of balance and intonation. The independence of parts requires rhythmic security and can help develop confidence of individual players. An added benefit of the trios would be their use for transposition practice. Beyond pedagogical uses, it is hoped that these trios will provide music for enjoyable trumpet ensemble collaboration.

These Valerio Bona pieces as published by Ricciardo Amadino provide interest by variety of texture and theme, and the edition is of high quality because of the absence of errors so often encountered in 16th century printed publications. Since the canzonettas tend to be presented in a limited selection of modes, the editor has transposed some of the pieces for the sake of variety for modern trumpeters. The excellent Amadino publication provided necessary accidentals and required only minor editing where altered notes are concerned. Dynamic markings were absent in Amadino’s edition and have not been added here. (BQ-179)
